Trails

This is an interactive map of the trail system in the Urban Reserve - click on the pins to see photographs of the views from these trails. The bike path along a former railway bed runs through the reserve, but you will not find these trails on any local map. Compacted beneath pedestrian feet, they are there for those who know where to meander off the asphalt path. This map was created during March and April of 2013 by Wesley Mech.

Railway

If you've used the Reserve, you likely noticed a rail line running north/south near the bike path. The rail line was historically used to transport timber from the port. Today the railway is still used occasionally, though trains must travel very slowly due to the conditions of the track and intensive human activities nearby. The tunnel leads directly to the Intervale, so it could potentially provide a movement corridor for mammals to travel between the two sites. We didn't find any evidence of that use, but people certainly use the tunnel to get from one place to the other.

Although we did not observe any signs that animals use this tunnel to connect to the Intervale, people certainly use it to travel between these two wild spaces.
